End of a Chapter...

It is with sadness that I post that this is the end of a chapter in the story of the Harritt Elementary Library Media Webage. Due to budget cuts in the district the position of Library Media Technology Teacher no longer exists. The library at Harritt will remain open and staffed with the help of an instructional assistant and volunteers. However, there will no longer be instruction in literacy skills or library skills as well as technology instruction from a certified librarian. This blog will remain open as a symbol of what was once taught at Harritt and what has been lost due to lack of funding for education.

Check-out and Renewal Information

Check Out Information:

All students have one organized check out time per week. In addition, students are encouraged to check out before and after school as long as staff is available to assist students wishing to check out books.

First graders may check out one book from the Everybody Section. [At the discretion of the teacher, students who are reading independently may check out from the Emergent Read section instead.] After Winter break students will also be allowed to check out from our display selections which will include special areas of interest, holiday books and from the Dewey Decimal nonfiction section of the library.

Second graders may check out one book from the Everybody or Emergent Readers section or from the displays. After Winter Break we will begin a deeper study into the Nonfiction section and the Dewey Decimal area of the library. At this time students will have a choice every other week of selecting from the Nonfiction section or Everybody/Emergent Reader section.

First and Second grade students are allowed one item at a time but can exchange their item during the morning or after school period between regular check out times.

Students in grades 3-5 may check out 1 items. One Fiction, Everybody or Emergent selection and one Nonfiction selection. Then a student can have two books but not from the same section of the library. Mix and match is the key.

It is important that students who are able to read independently check out books at their reading level. Ask your child about the I Pick and what that means when choosing a book.

Renewals Information

Students may renew a book one time if necessary to finish reading it. This includes fiction and nonfiction books. Books will not be renewed if a student can not locate the book. Students who have two books out will not be allowed to renew a book if there other book is overdue. Any student with over due books will not be allowed to renew or check out new books until their name is cleared of the over due book.

Overdue Books

7........days overdue...verbal reminder, possible hand stamp.
14.....days overdue.....students are given a colors reminder sheet to take home.
21... days overdue.... student calls home and reminder note is sent home.
28... days overdue ...student misses one recess.
35 or more days overdue and no contact has been made by the parent to the Library...Student misses more recess time until the books is returned or issue is resolved.

There are several options for lost of damaged books but the key in all of this is student responsibility for what belongs to all the students at Harritt.
